From 3000 years ago to modern time, sundials from Mediterranean countries have commonly been made from stone. Although cast from iron, we've attempted to capture the spirit of a hand chiseled stone sundial.

Mottoes have been an integral aspect of sundial design for centuries.
Traditional themes include the passing of time, loss, love, death,encouragement, advice and whimsy.

Fits All Rome Sundial Pedestal Bases, But Looks Best On Smaller Bases.

Solid Cast Iron Sundials:
In the 19th century a trend developed in Britain and America towards a more affordable alternative to bronze. Cast iron became this alternative material and was responsible for the first garden art to be mass-produced for the middle class. Everything from fountains and statues to urns were popular. Although affordable, the trade off with cast iron is that it rusts.  Of course these days, the rust finish in garden art has a large following and is an important part of the French country and the shabby chic look.
Some of our dials are painted with a verdigris finish and then lacquered to stave off each sundial to prevent oxidation, but these dials will eventually rust. We also make a few dials that are pre-rusted and then given a little bit of a whitewash finish.

About Rome Sundials:
For over 30 years we have been crafting our sundials as Shakespeare wrote in Henry VI, "quaintly, point by point." Each design is individually cast using the traditional sand mold process and then hand polished and buffed.You'll find that most of our sundials are horizontal or "garden sundials" which look beautiful either on a cast pedestal as a courtyard centerpiece or on an airy wrought iron base set deep in a garden. Uniqueness is the key at Rome. With over 50 different designs it's bound to seem a little overwhelming to make a decision, but let the decision process get narrowed down by thinking of our dials in terms of theme, material & price point. From the whimsical to stately, the reflective to inspiring - there's something for everyone. With the exception of a few antique reproductions, our sundials are original designs that you'll never see from other companies. You can also feel comfortable purchasing Rome sundials as we do not sell to the Sprawl Marts of the world. Our focus as always is on garden centers and specialty gift shops. Most of our sundials are cast in solid brass which we feel is the perfect medium, however we do offer items in alternative materials such as aluminum and iron. Most every sundial we manufacture is designed to mount on our 30 different pedestal bases. The bases make an attractive and easy way to set your dial in the yard or garden and are available at a wide range of prices and styles from ornate to minimalist.

Each pedestal base is designed to fit almost all of our sundials, so it's just a matter of matching the base you feel will look best with your sundial. Nautrally, the smaller diameter dials will look better on tapered neck or smaller stands and the larger dials will complement the bigger stands.
